HAL 13xy
Versatile ASIL B-ready 3D Hall-Effect Switch for Speed and Direction Detection
Overview
The HAL 13xy family consists of factory-programmable Hall-effect switch sensors specifically engineered for high-precision speed and direction detection in automotive and industrial environments. Utilizing TDK-Micronas’ renowned 3D HAL technology, the HAL 13xy features three orthogonal Hall elements (X, Y, Z) arranged in a pixel cell. This advanced design provides a 90° phase separation (quadrature signal) that is inherently independent of magnet pole spacing and air gap.
By enabling the simultaneous measurement of two magnetic-field components, the HAL 13xy offers manufacturers maximum flexibility in sensor and magnet placement. The family supports compact electric motor control, ensuring smooth motion, high safety standards, and enhanced user comfort.
Functionality
HAL 13xy sensors are monolithic integrated circuits that leverage a unique pixel cell design to capture multi-axial magnetic fields. The sensor delivers two independent open-drain outputs, which can be factory-configured for quadrature signals (speed/speed) or speed/direction signals.
The integrated 3D HAL technology ensures that the 90° phase shift remains stable regardless of the air gap or magnet pitch, simplifying the mechanical design of the motor assembly. The device operates with both static and dynamic magnetic fields up to 40 kHz and is compatible with various ferrite and rare-earth magnets through multiple temperature coefficient options. This versatility allows engineers to implement cost-effective and robust sensing solutions for complex motion control tasks.
As a Safety Element out of Context (SEooC) with an integrated continuous built-in self-test (BIST), the HAL 13xy is ASIL B-ready in accordance with ISO 26262. This makes the sensor suitable for seamless integration into automotive safety-related systems.
